Immunotherapy

If your pet suffers from severe allergies and you notice continuous biting, scratching, or licking habits, it is possible that immunotherapy is a treatment option for your companion. A variety of sources ranging from food and fleas to dust, grass and pollen, can cause allergic reactions in your pet. Country Place Veterinary Clinic offers immunotherapy as a solution for pets who are suffering from moderate to severe allergies that cause pain and discomfort.

An allergic reaction occurs when your pet inhales airborne substances such as house dust or pollen, or ingests a substance to which they are sensitive. We use patient specific allergy tests to determine just what causes a reaction in your pet. Once the cause of the allergy is identified, we develop a customized treatment plan created specifically for your pet’s needs.

Immunotherapy works by introducing small amounts of the allergen causing the reaction into your pet’s system over time. Gradually, the dosage will be increased so that your pet will build up a tolerance to the allergens and the allergic response to the irritant will diminish over time. This is the only therapy that changes the immune system’s response to allergies rather than suppressing the immune system’s reactions. At Country Place Veterinary Clinic, we use oral or injectable desensitization treatments. Please remember that some allergic conditions may take a significant amount of time to diagnose and bring under control.

If you live in St. Martinville, Catahoula, or Coteau Holmes, Louisiana, and your pet is showing signs of excessive scratching, biting, or whimpering, let us determine if immunotherapy is the right treatment.
